What’s new in Gym Buddy 1.8? 03/05/09
The Previous section of the input screen now gives you the option of listing your last 5 workouts in a compact format, rather than just your last workout. Is 5 too many? Not enough?
I played around with shoving more info into the compact format, such as One Rep Max and seconds of rest. There’s not enough room to display the complete time, but what if it just showed you how long you rested between sets in seconds? I decided it just cluttered it up and wasn’t that useful, but please let me know what you need.
Also once you can see your last 5 workouts, why do you need your last workout in full format? Right now it defaults to ‘Last Workout’ but I think maybe I should change it. It does however keep your choice from one screen to the next so you don’t have to change it for every exercise.
A user wrote to me explaining the usefulness of workout load (thanks Christopher), which was something I hadn’t considered. So that is now a new feature accessed from the workout detail screen. I had originally dismissed it as a poor measure of strength and decided to go with the One Rep Max concept, but that’s really not what it is. It is more a measure of how much work you did, rather than how strong you are -- which is helpful in preventing over-training. Plus it’s fun and motivating in that it makes you want to do one more set just so you can set a new record. It is the middle screen above and is sortable either by date or from high to low. Version 1.9 will include a really cool graph of this info.
There are also further improvements to the Body Calc tab. The settings for gender and units was moved to a separate settings screen (tap the sprocket). Also you can now choose to include your measurements when you send an email.
It took Apple longer than usual to approve this version, which actually turned out to be good news. I already had version 1.9 done, and didn’t want to start with 2.0 until I could upload 1.9. So I had a few days with nothing to do and I spent it in photoshop upgrading the icons and themes, etc. Now, comparing it to the old ones, I finally realize how bad the old ones were. Thanks to all of you for putting up with them for so long. I can’t wait for you to see the changes and I’ll be uploading 1.9 tomorrow (3/6), which will give me one day of feedback in case there are any major problems with 1.8.
I remain committed to making Gym Buddy the greatest workout log ever, so hang in there and thanks for coming along for the ride!
Phil.
Version 1.8 Bug Alert! 03/07/09
I am hoping this only affects jail-broken devices that have installed a different version of sqlite, but if you haven’t set your email address in Gym Buddy, version 1.8 could (and will with Cydia version of sqlite) cause a crash at start-up. If you delete Gym Buddy and reinstall it, it will work -- but you will have lost all your data.
If you are already suffering from this problem, version 1.9 has been uploaded to Apple and will solve this issue. Your data should be fine once you install 1.9. You just won’t be able to use Gym Buddy until 1.9 hits the store, which should be within the week.
I you haven’t upgraded yet, please make sure you have an email address set in the email tab before upgrading.
(If you have a non-jailbroken device and upgraded without a set email, please let me know if it’s working. )
My sincere apologies to anyone affected by this issue. If it makes you feel any better, for version 2.0 I am working on a way to backup and restore Gym Buddy’s database so that these issues in the future aren’t quite so serious.
