What’s new in Gym Buddy 3.2.8? 06/21/2010
Thanks to iOS 4.0, Gym Buddy now has persistent state. Several of you have been calling for this, so thanks to Apple for making it easy. Because Gum Buddy is such a complex app, it would have been a monumental task to do properly, and now Apple has done it for me. Thanks Apple!
Unfortunately, the countdown timers and the Interval Timer don’t continue to count when Gym Buddy is in the background, but I will make that a priority for the next release.
I also updated much of the graphics for the higher resolution iPhone 4 screen. They look amazing in the simulator and can’t wait to see them on a real phone at that incredible density.
Because it is not typical to quit an app in iOS 4.0 -- you just send it to the background -- having to quit after restoring your database no longer seems right, so you no longer have to do that. If you’re changing themes though, you will still have to quit Gym Buddy by hitting its ‘x’ in the multi-tasking bar.
There were a couple of bug fixes too:
•Countdown timers weren’t sounding on the cardio sets.
•The background on the Settings screen was wrong.
I told someone I would fix the capitalization on Exercise notes from every word to first word only, and, aargh, I forgot. I’ll get that next time.
Big news coming!

Bug Report 06/24/10: iOS 4.0 changed the way developers display their own buttons on top of the system’s keyboards, and it will take a little time to perfect. If you hit the ‘Done’ button while in a workout with a keyboard open, the decimal point will persist and block the corner of your screen. The only way to make it go away is to quit Gym Buddy and restart. (To quit an app in 4.0 you have to open the multi-tasking bar, hold your finger on the Gym Buddy icon, and then hit the ‘x’ -- just hitting the home button only sends it to the background.)
I will upload a fix, and hopefully make the timers run in the background, this week. Please let me know if you find anything else.
Update 06/25/10: Actually the problem was worse than I thought. If you enter a decimal point for a cardio exercise from the Exercises tab, it crashes. That’s pretty major, so I uploaded a fix to Apple this morning asap. I’ll get to the timers next.
Phil.
